A Refresh

Yes, after nearly three months without writing anything on here I am back with a refreshed mind and itching fingers that are burning to spill out my thoughts – and ironically just in time for the new year. Why the sudden return to writing with simplistic fonts on a visual screen? Well over the last couple of months, I have gone through a dramatic shift in lifestyle. It sounds cliche i know but hear me out. I have always been someone who believes in equality, coming from a family that was largely just females, I grew up as an independent female who even from the young age of twelve and thirteen knew what feminism and equality was and knew that it was something that I believed in strongly and would defend till my last day. And considerably over this last year, where everything has gone down the drain, this side of me has arisen more and began to realize more as well.

However, I’ve noticed rather shamefully that despite preaching that I have these beliefs – i am doing nothing to stand behind them. Nothing at all. I think what really shook me up and started to spur me into action was when I questioned my reading habits. When i asked myself – when was the last time I read a book that had a poc character? A lgbtqia+ character? A character with disabilities? I asked myself this and then looked up to my bookcase in revolt. I always thought myself as a diverse reader, a reader who has always read books full of empowerment and diversity. Ha. The only diversity in the books I own is that most of the main characters are female – oh white straight females that is. Not only that, I have also realized how problematic and racist my favorite books are and the scary thing is was that even after rereading all these books what three? four? five times, I had not noticed it.

And that made me realize how little diversity I have in my world – not in just what I read, but also watch, follow, idolize. And that then made me realize how much I need to change my ways. I need to start doing something rather then just stating, oh yes I’m this and this. Even though its something small, I am starting with reading diverse books, not only that, but #ownvoices and also make sure that my research for my book is solid and realistic – and not inaccurate.

With this fresh new intake on my lifestyle, I decided to go back to blogging and absorb myself in whirling words and thoughts again. The blog posts i will be posting may not always be so structured as last time with solid tbrs and reviews every week. I will do those of course – but I would like to come to this place as something more personal. A little corner for me to spill out random words and angry vents, like a small diary in a way, but of course open for discussion. Well thats that i suppose,  I never know how to finish these posts off….

So I guess I will just sort

August Wrap Up

Hello my fellow book dragons, long time no see!

Alrighty its been a week without social media for me, so I am sincerely sorry for not posting, its just I have been on holiday in the lovely Portugal, bathing in the sun and water alike! On holiday I read some pretty uhsome reads, so instead of doing an individual review for each I thought I may as well just do an overall wrap up!

  1. The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon – 4.5 Midnight Stars. OH. MY. GOD. GUYS. This book is 100000% so much better then the first book. I read The Bone Season a few weeks ago and wasn’t particularly amazed about it and also I was not aware there was a glossary – so I basically spent the whole time stumbling over the words and meanings. BUT. The sequel proves what everyone raves about, I absolutely loved the entire seven dials/ London part and exploring deeper into the gang history. And honestly guys…. those last few chapters??? My nails were a mess!! SO SO SO TENSE and EXCITING! Another thing I loved was although Warden is a hawt thang, he wasn’t this main central part of the story for Paige which is koooolll!
  2. The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian – 3.5 Midnight Stars. This book was seriously not what I was expecting. It was honest, light and very very realistic. It had a few twists that had me going OHMYGOD what the frickle frackle?? It was a story about friendship, first crush/love and learning to know what to keep in the past and how to move on. It had a very bittersweet ending which was a relief because i honestly thought the writer wouldn’t wrap it up nicely but it was! A very light summer read!
  3. The Problem With Forever by Jennifer Armentrout – 4 Midnight Stars. Its funny I am not a huge fan of contemporary books, but I did read a lot of them over the summer. This one was the best by far, although the plot was not the greatest pace and there was something in it that scared both my mum and I, it dealt with some serious issues rather well, had lots of diverse interesting characters and also had a very soft and delicate atmosphere about it. I liked Mallory I really did, she was very open, ‘human’ and easy to read about. And Rider oh my *swoons*. I could honestly see this as the next summer-teen-movie for 2017!
  4. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – 3 Midnight Stars. I read this book for school, so the fact I had to analysis and rethink everything is probably why I disliked this book. Do not get me wrong, the writing is outstanding and flowery (which is what I love) and also the plot of course is one of a kind. But the characters…. Ugh. I hated them all. Like really really really dislike them. And its kinda hard to enjoy the book when you can’t stand the characters. This has only happened once before – with The Girl on the Train, but yeah if it had likeable/relatable characters it would 100% be about a 4 start rating…

Welllll thats a wrap up!! I read some pretty good beachy reads that I would reccomend to anyone who likes a one day read!

Twilight Thinkings: Head Cannons

Hello my fellow book dragons,

first of I just wanted to apologies for my odd posting habits, I have no sense of rhythm or pattern!! But never mind, and i know i promised a Ruin and Rising review but there has been something nagging at the back of my mind for a while, I’m not really sure what it is but basically i just want to write down some head cannons i have in mind that i want/needddd to happen:

  •  One head cannon i REALLY want to see is a gender swapped tv show/film version of the story lines like Stranger Things, Super Eight, ET and The Goonies. This 100% probably doesn’t make any sense so lemme explain, so you know in how both of these productions there is a group of middle school aged boys who are the nerds of the school and they land themselves in some kickass adventure – I want this, but with girls. No personality changes, no girlying up, just replace these dorky cool boys with girls – BECAUSE COME ON THAT WOULD BE SO DAMN AMAZING and secretly i would love to be one of them

  • Another thing that has been bugging me lately is female villains. I need a female villain who is evil. Like really scary twisted messed up evil. I’m truly sick to death with female villains whose back story is that they have either turned evil due to past lovers or jealousy or something that is to do with a love interest. Enough is enough. Authors please feed us some evil dark female villains that don’t need a love interest to make a interesting back story for themselves, you can do it for men so why not women?!? LIKE MOTHER GOTHEL FROM TANGLED oh no wait ahh no actually her motive is still beauty never mind. (see what I mean??)

tumblr_nah5ywXBaZ1r1c7rlo1_250She use to scare the jebbies out of me

  •  Leading on from villains, another thing i want to see (I’M SO NEEDY OMG) is for the villains to win? Sorry not trying to be a pessimist or anything but heroes cant always win – its not realistic. One head cannon I would love to see is a different version to Shadow and Bone series, i think seeing the different path would of been amazing and too be honest i would be all for it!
  • Another thing i think needs to be changed up is the YA heroine, now don’t get me wrong the fact that there are all those amazing female leads out there is crazy and empowering, but what i really need at the moment is YA hero but with the traits of a heroine. That sounds weird. What i mean is i think the YA section needs some heroes that are allowed to be weak and feminine (am i wording that right?), that are allowed to develop into heroes rather from the beginning be one. Maybe i just want multiply Percy Jacksons and Harry Potters hahaha

  • Also i think this is what everyone wants BUT PLEASE MORE MORE POC and LGBT+ MAIN characters not side ones, not friends but MAIN characters and not necessarily just in contemporary but in alll genres and it doesn’t have to be a thing that is one of the main points of the book, it should be a thing that is just natural and not made a big deal out of. I just want it to be a norm please.

Okay guys that is a wrap, sorry for the short almost whiny? post but its stuff that has being whirling round my angry little buzzing head for weeks and I need to discuss it!! Let me know what you guys NEED to see more in books, films and Tv shows!

Twiligh Thinkings: Throne of Midnight and Fire

When I heard that @Pollyandbooks , @gingerbreadbooks and @weereader  were doing a reread of the Throne of Glass series, my inner fae literally scrambled (gracefully of course or else Rowan would of given me a lecture) to have an excuse to reread these BEAUTIES again because I mean duhhhh its Sarah J Maas who wouldn’t pass up this opportunity?! So once again I sat down to read these books again and now mix feelings, both new and old, are surfacing and I must. MUST. MUSTTTTT vomit them all over this post before I explode  – sorry being graceful doesn’t sit well with me… sometimes when you need to verbal vomit ya just got to, Rowan will just have do deal with it! (Prepare for a very rambly ride)

TOG and COM and HOF Plot Opinion:

I’ve reread throne of glass plentyyyyyyy of times seriously the amount is catching up to Harry Potter which i reread every year – gee that is pretty scary! But this time, I decided to discard the screaming fangirl in me *silently sobs* and bring out the more mature reader I hide away, I know, I know boRING but that hidden reader does actually have some good points… for example:

  • Throne of Glass, is probably the best thought out and the best well paced book out of the series which was surprising to me because whenever i think about the series i kinda forget that this is actually part of the series (strange but ya know) i think its because the knowledge from the other books overwhelm this one so much that its sort of sheltered in their shadows. But oh my god the plot for the first book is so delicious i could devour it, and even upon rereading it i still find no faults with it. I think the one thing i love most about this book, is the fact that your introduce to Celaenas world yet there are parts that are kept from you, parts that Maas gives you sips of aka Sam but never fully reveals anything which makes the whole book soooooo tense and exciting.
  • Crown of Midnight, in my memory has always been my less favorite, but reading it again i thought this book was alright. i didn’t enjoy the first part but i think the character development towards the ending is breath taking, its like we were seeing through a veil and Maas slowly lifts it revealing who the characters actually are. Chaol: someone who has been shoving down his true self, someone who is not entirely open to change and someone who is very afraid. Dorian: someone who starts  to realize the person he wants to become and wants to live in a different world. Aelin: someone who has been hiding her past, and who is not actually one person but rather layers and layers of identities that consumes her till she is not actually sure in who she is or who she has left to care for.
  • Which leads me onto HOF. I love this book, its my most favorite of all times. I know most people don’t like it because the characters change a lot and everything is quite drained. But it shows a wonderful character arc for Aelin, we see that the arrogant, swaggering assassin is actually just a young girl who is only just finding out how much blood she has on her hands and doesn’t and is not motivated to find her real self. Also Manon appears. Ohhhhh  how i LAVe manon like Maas said she basically represents the evil in us mawhhhhaaahah.

TOG and COM and HOF Shipping Opinion:

Okay. Okay i can do this*DEEEEEPPP BREATH* yes i am going to talk about this. I can hear your collective groans. I know, i know. The shippers in this fandom are terrifying, seriously i cant say i ship Rowaelin without the fear of getting my head bitten off. I was talking about this with Alison (ofcrimesandrhymes – go check out her BOOTIFUL new blog) and these ugh “ship wars” have seriously taken toll and sends out really bad vibes around the book, so before anyone gets their knickers in a twist I’m not making a dig at you – these are just my natural opinion i’m not deliberately stirring up some beef – we have the suriel for that. But anyway here it goes… OH AND ALSO IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE SPOiLED DONT READ

  • Upon rereading Throne of Glass i realized i had forgotten what a lille cinnamon roll Dorian honestly, he is such a good character and i think i got bored with him when i first read the books because i mean witches and fire breathing bitch queens appeared and that kinda overshadowed Dorian piney love for Celaena. I don’t ship him with her though sorry doriaelin shippers it just to be honest after QOS and HOF i can’t imagine him with anyone else especially not manon ew no *shudders* and i think he deserves some time to find himself a bit. But i do understand why you want him to get with Celaena but i think they are better as friends but if all things go to hell i wouldn’t hate it if he ended up with her – in fact it would make sense for them to do to tie their kingdoms together.
  • Then onto Crown of Midnight, we see chaolena. Before i actually wouldn’t mind if Celaena ended up with Chaol or Rowan but now after rereading and being the mature reader i deiced no. Just no. Maas created their relationship that i dont think they could ever ever get back together. For example: DID YOU KNOW THEIR INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP ONLY LASTED A WEEK. A WEEK?! before the whole you know *wails* so yeah that kind of threw me off and Chaol refusal to accept Celaena as she was. But i wish their relationship didn’t play out like it did in QOS, i was very upset and wished Maas had done it in a different way.
  • AND NOW FOR HOF: *inner fangirl escapes and screams  and dances and releases inner inner fangirl* RoWANNNN. Yes you may of relaised this is my OTP. The otp of all time after Feysand. And theres a tiny part of me that is whimpering at the thought that Maas might pull her cruel twists and kill him off . I understand a lot of people, a LOT of people dont ship this ship, and for most reason i understand. Rowans attiude at the beginning of HOF is certainly down right nasty but the fae we see at QOS i feel is the real Rowan and i know this ship has a lot of lose planks and could sink at any moment but it just feels right…. also Rowan understand Aelin and STILL respects her and loves her and okay if people are still putting up a fight and compare him to Tamlin they can leave now thank you very much BECAUSE THERE ARE NO COMPARISONS. TAMLIN IS MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY ABUSIVE AND JUST WANTS TO HAVE LOTS OF SEX AND BE IN CONTROL AND ROWAN IS NOT LIKE THAT

ANYWHO once i finish rereading QOS, im pretty sure i would of exploded by then and my soul will have to find a horcrux so i can read EOS when it comes out

people this is the second to last book

July Wrap Up

Hello my fellow book dragons! Phew what a weekend!!! With YALC on Friday and many harry potter celebrations I nearly forgot to do a July wrap up!

July was actually a pretty good reading month for me – and is it me or has this month gone leisurely slow? I read a total of six books which was so much better compared to May/June where I read about only four in total….

  1. Burnt shadows by Kamila Hamsie – 3.5 stars: This book started out brilliant then the ending just annoyed to much that I bumped down the rating.
  2. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo – 4.5 stars (reread): Upon rereading this book, I actually enjoyed it much more and began to like Alina more as a character then I had the first time – but Mal is still annoying and eh.
  3. Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo – 4 stars: I will be honest although I really did enjoy this book, I found the situations Alina would find herself in very repetitive and I’m not going to even lie I wanted some more darkling…. But the ending was an interesting take and i look forward to the final book.
  4. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare – 4.5 stars: PERFECTION… THAT AND I WANT THE NEXT BOOK NOW LIKE RIGHT NOW PLEASE
  5. This Savage Song by V.E Schwab – 5 stars:  Ahh this book was amazing, perfect balance of genres, perfectly flawed characters and some damn perfect plot twists!
  6. United as One by Pittacus Lore – 5 stars: Shhh let me wallow in my pain because this series is finished and i can not except that yet……

So overall July was good, I read some books that have hit the rankings of my top books in 2016 and I’m excited to now have another full month to read more books ESPECIALLY HARRY POTTER BECAUSE WHO AM I KIDDING!!

Review: Lady Midnight

Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare

Rating: 41/2 early morning stars

2016 Ranking: In my top ten reads this year 100%

Favourite Quote: “Nobody calls me ‘blondie’ and keeps their kneecaps” – Emma Carstairs (GARL YOU SLAY)

Good Reads Description: Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where faeries teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them. Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

Firstly before I say anything else – JULIAN FREAKING BLACKTHORN PEOPLE WHERE DID THIS LILLE CUTIE COME FROM *GOOEY EYE CENTRAL RIGHT NOW* ??!! phew sorry had to get that one out of my system my fellow book dragons…

Anywho, back to the review! When I started this book, I’m not going to lie I was very very nervous. TMI and TID where okay and I enjoyed them but looking back on those series I just remember being cringed out and a bit bored with some of the characters. But let me tell you this was one wild (ONE READ DAY) from the begging. I LOVED LOVED the Blackthorn family and Emma and they connected to me more than Clary and Jace or Tessa, Will and Jem!

Thoughts on the plot: I think out of my entire thoughts on the book, the plot is rated the highest, it was well paced with just enough detail that made the story flow really well. It was also the kind of plot that made you concentrate on the characters as well which I love – like you knew what the main plot line was but Clare crafted this novel so well that it felt you were with the gang on their mission rather than just reading about (DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE OMG) and by the end of it all those mini little plot line were sewed into the main plot line making this book for me pretty freaking awesome and starving for some more

Thoughts on the characters: Only three words I need for them: I LOVED THEM. They were actually pretty great characters and I don’t know why but I connected to them on a more personal level. I think one of the main reasons why was the fact it was a family with ranging ages and although they were young for some reason I didn’t see them doing all this stuff unrealistic unlike with the NY gang. I also loved one of the plot twist with the characters, I actually didn’t see it coming and was very shocked when it happened. OKAY PREWARNING THE NEXT PART CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS SO SKIP TO THE NEXT PARA. – The best thing I loved about Jules was that he was the inexperienced one when it came to relationships – not the other way round and I don’t know why but for me that just made this relationship 1000x better (but thanks to the ending my little heart was torn to shreds and I just want my baby to be strong) ALSO OKAY WHEN THE MENTIONED SIMON WAS A SHADOW H UNTER I COMPLETELY FLIPPED MY SHET when did this happen?!?!? also im crying his band name is goals. oh and also MARK (no words are needed am I right)! OH AND KIT I’m liking whatever Clare has in store for this guy because he sure is one hell of a mystery….

Alrighty I’m going to wrap this review up now or else you will experience a brambly rambly so stay tuned book dragons for some new content soon AND IF YOU HAVENT READ THIS BOOK READ IT AND THEN I WILL HELP YOU FIND YOUR TORN OUT HEART.

xx Soph

PS: I do realise its two o’clock in the afternoon but it was early morning when I started to write this out so please don’t hate!!

Me? A Blogger?

Hello there my fellow book dragons, its your number one fangirl writing from behind yet another screen trying but failing to sound like a witty funny girl you just so want to meet in real life.

Sorry to disappoint you! But I’m just plain old Sophie whose only quirks consist of not just reading but screaming about books and the occasional time where I sit and write something and who also like everyone else is now starting a blog…

To all those out there who have no idea who I am. Run. Fast. Before you get caught up in the storm called fangirls!!! But if you’re brave enough to stick around, my name is Sophie and welcome to my blog! I’m sorry, even writing this introduction post is painful, I can not imagine whats it like for you *winces* But anyho the reason why I’ve started a blog is because I realized on my Instagram I really want to go on and on and on in my captions but there is not enough space to do it. So… I’ve decided to start up a blog where I can ramble, bamble and not have a care in the world. I’ve actually being blogging since the age of fourteen but …well … lets say that blog was cringe central (If I ever start to talk about hairstyle or makeup pages PLEASE DEAR GOD STOP ME I BEG OF YOU) so its been deleted into the abyss of deleted blogs and I’ve decided to start afresh with a new one!

So what can you expect? Well verbal diarrhea for one thing (I can never stop rambling soz) but seeing as my insta has turned into a pretty page where I try to be cool and tumblr, I’ve decided to write reviews on this (prepare for the worst reviews you have seen by the way), monthly wrap ups and also some deep thoughts about books… to make this blog seem much more sophistacted then it is, I’m joking!!

Okay I’m going to shut up now and leave your poor minds to peace, but if you have stuck through this short but agonizing page to the bottom congratulations!! (can we be friends?)
